Make sure you're prepared

Make sure you're prepared

Even if the water level is far from rising, it's a good idea to be ready for potential flooding.

Value of having emergency supplies

Regardless of whether you leave or stay, you will always need emergency supplies in the event of flooding. Make sure you stock up in advance. Read below why it is important to have stocks of various items on hand.

Food and drink

You won't be able to go shopping or order food. You won't be able to use your cooker, oven or microwave. And there will be no tap water available. Make sure you have:

  • Non-perishable (long-life) food
  • Food that doesn't need to be heated up
  • Bottles of water
  • If tap water is still available, make sure you can quickly fill a bucket or your bathtub with water.

Keep warm and dry

Your central heating will not be working. Most casualties are caused by hypothermia. Make sure you have:

  • Blankets
  • Towels
  • Warm clothing and waterproofs

Health

You won't be able to go to the doctor, chemist or hospital. Make sure you have:

  • Sufficient medications
  • First-aid kit
  • Disinfectant hand gel

Contact with family and friends

Let family and friends know what your plans are in good time. During the flood event itself it is difficult to contact others, as telephone lines and internet access may be down.
