Leaving

Leaving

If you decide to leave, it is a good idea to be prepared for the journey. Take supplies with you and be prepared to face bad weather on departure.

(An animation. In blue letters appears: what do you do if the water level rises... Do you leave? Take with you: water, food, medicines, blankets and fuel. Follow the instructions from the authorities. A guy drives away in his car. Text in video: Also check for other tips on this website.)

What do you take with you?

If you leave, you will need to look after yourself for a number of days. Make sure you have:

  • drinking water, food, medicines
  • sturdy shoes, warm clothing and waterproofs
  • blankets and dry towels
  • radio and battery-operated torch
  • candles, matches, lighter
  • whistle to attract attention
  • form(s) of identification
  • sufficient fuel

Situation on the roads

When you leave your area, there will also be a lot of others doing the same thing.

Note:

  • there will be no public transport
  • the roads will be unlit
  • petrol stations and shops may be out of stock or be closed
  • it will often not be possible to use the roads
  • listen to your regional radio station

The weather

If the weather is bad, driving conditions will be difficult due to standing water on the road. If the standing water rises more than 15 cm, your vehicle may lose traction. Apart from that, the combination of rain and strong winds may reduce visibility.

Turbulent weather

Helping others

  • Not everyone will be able to get away 'under their own steam' in the event of flooding. Help people in your area.
  • You can help others on the way, too, but keep yourself warm: beware of the risk of hypothermia.
